16-Year-Old Finn McGill Wins Billabong Pipe Masters Trials
The Billabong Pipe Masters Trials finished today with 16-year-old Hawaiian Finn McGill taking the win. Finn battled against a hungry field of locals and Pipeline specialists to come out on top. The waves on offer were in the 4-6 foot range all day, but by the time the final came around the wind backed off and the waves started to chuck top to bottom. Finn faced off against Victor Bernardo from Brazil as well as Josh Moniz and Gavin Beshen of Hawaii. All four surfers charged hard and had solid mid range scores throughout the final, but it was Finn who was able to find the best wave of the heat, an 8.6 ride for a steep Pipe wave that spit him out to cheers.
Other great performances in the event came from Jack Robinson (who was stopped just short of the final due to an inconsistent heat), Ezekiel Lau and Jamie O'Brien.
Finn will now head into the main event of the Billabong Pipe Masters along with Gavin Beschen to face off against the top 34 surfers in the world. Tune in to all of the action via Worldsurfleague.com.
