19th Annual NHHS Newport Classic
This past weekend (May 19 + 20), surfers from around Southern California converged on 54th Street in Newport Beach for the 19th Annual NHHS Newport Classic. The surf was forecasted to be less than stellar, but when everyone showed up on Saturday morning we were pleasantly surprised to see more than contestable waves on tap.
The fun wasn't limited to the water. There were prizes (including John John Florence & Mick Fanning signed jerseys) to be raffled off all day - with all proceeds benefiting the Newport Harbor High School Surf Team.
On Saturday the early round heats started, with surfers competing in 10 different divisions: Elementary, Junior High, High School, Womens, Bodyboard, Longboard, Soft Tops, Open Mens, Mens 30-40, & Masters (Mens 40+). The waves were fun throughout the entire day, & after some strong heats all the way through the quarterfinals, our Finals Day heats were locked in and ready for Sunday.
Sunday did not disappoint, as 3-5 foot waves continued to roll through. There were some hotly contested heats all day, but arguably none more entertaining than the Soft Top final (just take our word for it, it was awesome). After the Finals Day action finished, everyone gathered on the beach after for the awards ceremony, in which every finals participant received a backpack full of Billabong gear as their prize. Local surfer, Matt Myers, also took home a Billabong wetsuit & $500 for winning the Men's Open (graduated) Division. Jo Jo Whelan took home the win in the High School division.
All in all, it was an amazing weekend for everyone involved and we are already psyching for the 20th year of this event next summer!
