Ferrolterra Movistar PantÃn Classic presented by Billabong
The Event: This mythical event, known in the past as the Pantin Classic surfing championships, is back to one of Spain’s most prestigious surfing spots. The 23rd edition of the 6-Star Ferrolterra Movistar Pantín Classic presented by Billabong is part of the ASP World Qualifying Series. This year, it has been upgraded to a 6-star WQS contest for the first time in its history. Approx. 125 surfers from all over the world will be fighting for $145.000 in prize money.
History: The history of Pantín Classic began in 1988, making this event one of oldest pro surfing contest of Spain. During the last two decades riders such as C.J. Hobgood, Damien Hardman and legendary surfers Tom Curren and Billabong’s Mark Occhiluppo blessed this event. This year again, the Ferrolterra Movistar Pantín Classic presented by Billabong will witness world class surfing with the participation of big names like Raoni Monteiro, Leonardo Neves and Rodrigo Dornelles from Brasil, Dayyan Neve, Shaun Cansdell, and Yadin Nicol from Australia, USA’s Cory Lopez , Gabe Kling and Nat Curran, Hawaii’s Sunny Garcia and John-John Florence, and of course a great european contingent with Billabong’s Hodei Collazo and Markos San Segundo (EUK), followed by Aritz Aramburu (EUK), Goñi Zubizarreta (ESP), Joan Duru (FR), Michael Picon (FR) all already confirmed.
The spot: Pantín is located northwest of Galicia, in the province of A Coruña where the holy town of Santiago de Compostela is located. This region is exceptionally beautiful and diverse! The landscape is a highlight with cliffs, rivers, mountains, valleys and endless beaches. Pantín has long been called “The Wave Factory” by the locals, as there are waves almost 365 days a year.
What’s new: For the first time in the history of the Pantin Classic, the Ferrolterra Movistar Pantín Classic by Billabong has progressed this year into the small elite group of 6-Star events, making it one of the most important WQS events (World Qualifying Series) in the World! As back-Up, organizers will set up an alternative site on the beach of Doniños in case both events (mens and girls) run simultaneously.
