Climate cool: Interview with Parrys Raines
Your Name? Parrys Raines
Where are you from? Wollongong - South Coast of NSW
What's your favourite thing about being an environmentalist?
Definitely being around other people doing great things for the environment. I have a large network of friends from around the world all doing amazing things and we are always sharing ideas and supporting each other. Learning about the environment is fun too. I went to Borneo a couple of years ago to make a documentary about Orangutans and to see for myself how the forests are being replaced with Palm Oil. As a surfer I am passionate about our oceans too. I have been trying to learn as much as I can about the oceans so I can teach others how to look after it. Unfortunately climate change will bring problems for our oceans. I also love meeting people who are taking action and people who are coming up with innovative ideas to help the planet. I love the fact that Billabong is environmentally conscious and I love the boardies made from plastic bottles – so cool. I love to see business such as Billabong be a leader in their industry. We need more businesses like that.
Do you surf?
Yes at every opportunity!
What else do you get up to in your spare time?
Surf, surf and surf. I also do a bit of mountain biking and I love hanging out with my buddies. I love eating pizza and chocolate –yummy!
What's your favourite music at the moment?
I am listening to Pete Murray, Kesha, Lady Gaga. Sometimes I just like to randomly choose songs on my iPod.
What are your best tips for people who want to be environmentally aware?
Learn as much as you can about what impact you are having on the planet and change your behaviors. We haven’t got another planet to move to so we need to take care of this one. Find something you care about such as oceans, animals etc and then set about protecting them. I have a heap of tips on my website and a list for just taking care of our oceans.
How can people help you in your cause?
Just keep checking on my website as I have a couple of projects coming up and make a commitment to help your local environment, every bit helps.
