Virginie MEDEL - Designer Billabong Girls Europe
Fashion has always been part of my life. I got into it when I was a little girl when I created clothes for my dolls. As I’ve got older, I have always chosen an easygoing lifestyle between travelling, small jobs and surfing. After studying fashion I travelled a lot and discovered Brazil where I fell in love with swimwear and therefore decided to create my own little swimwear collection.
Then I had the great opportunity to fulfil my passion by joining the Billabong Europe design team last January.
Throughout this contest, I expect our "new young designers" to give us original, trend aware ideas, while at the same time getting to know better what they want!
My ideal swimsuit must be both comfortable and feminine. It’s all about colour, quality, fit and print. If you have all those ingredients together it’s a winner – the killer bikini.
Nic Bond - Buyer GSM ER
I have worked in the action sports industry for 20 years, moving from retail manager to buyer through hard work, passion and determination. I have now been a buyer for 12 years. I love seeing new products, ideas and inspirations. I’m a keen snowboarder in the winter and passionate about the beach in the summer. I’m really excited to see the designs coming through in the design a bikini competition!
What do I expect from the contest?
To see some amazing designs for a bikini from up & coming designers or from someone with a passion for Billabong products.
What’s your Ideal bikini?
Something colourful & beautiful. A bikini that is pretty but good for sport. Something Feminine & gorgeous that screams I am the Billabong Girl!
Justine Dupont - Billabong Girls Pro Surfer
Justine Dupont, whose career is already most impressive, including an ASP European Women’s Junior title, an ASP European Women’s title and a runner-up finish in the prestigious ASP World Junior tour event at Narabeen in Australia, is very proud to be part of the design a bikini contest jury: I am stoked to be part of the design a bikini contest jury, I think it’s amazing to give everyone a chance to express its own creativity, it’s a great way to pick up new talents who are willing to become fashion designers. It’s good to see girls needs for this summer bikinis.
For me the perfect bikini would be colorfoul and easy to wear to chill out on the beach as well as comfy for surfing.
Claire O’Neill - Marketing Account Manager – INVISTA (Lycra)
With over 20 years of industry experience working for major companies including, VF Corporation, Bravissimo and Speedo International, I have a wealth of knowledge to rely upon. I started my career as a Textile Designer, before moving into Sportswear, Swimwear Design and product development. Most recently, I focused on marketing and in my role at INVISTA I help to promote the benefits of using the best fibres to produce the best fabrics.
The competition is a great way to showcase your talents as a swimwear designer. I will be looking for creativity, innovation and of course an understanding of the key elements which make up the perfect bikini – fit, style, colour. I am excited about finding the best design to be part of the Billabong bikini range which uses Xtra Life LYCRA® fibre fabrics.
The perfect bikini is one which fits really well. I want it to stay looking new for longer and I definitely don’t want any bag or sag ! I always look for the Xtra Life LYCRA® fibre hangtag because I know this will give me a swimsuit with fabrics that are durable, high quality and won’t lose their stretch.
Britta Burger - Stylist & Editor
Quote about the contest:
The colours for this spring/summer are incredibly bright, almost fluorescent. I’d love to see this upbeat catwalk trend reflected in the bikini designs. And there have been so many different styles around recently so I’m hoping for a huge variety of shapes too. And a few mismatched tops and bottoms maybe??
