• About a Girl: Meet Sybil Steel

Meet Sybil Steel, one of our favourite fashion photographer who shot Billabong Women's Summer 13 Campaign in Hawaii.

Tell us a little bit about yourself? How did you get into photography?

I'm a California native who has been traveling since a kid and I haven't seem to have stopped.  I think once your parents instill that crazy travel bug in you, you can never sit somewhere too long.
Once I had two children and decided to re-explore my career, photography was a natural extension of years producing and a few years of styling.  I pinch myself now to think I get to do this for a job and continue to travel and meet people.

If you could live anywhere on this planet where would you build your dream home?

Wow, that's a tough question as our world is so incredible and unique.  But in France.  It's our next stop to live with our kids and it feels like the ultimate goal. I'd keep a little studio in Jodphur/Rajasthan if I could throw that in!

How would you describe your style?

I wear a lot of black, grey, white and denim.  Structured pieces with a detail that stands out but is also classic. Alexander Wang,  Ellery and Rag and Bone are some of my favorite pieces in my wardrobe. On a casual day you'll find me in denim shorts, little booties and a soft white button up shirt or a perfect tee.  The only jewelry I wear is rings.

What type of cameras do you shoot with?

I shoot with the Canon Mark II 5D and for videos on Red cameras (in the hands of a director of photography so I can produce and direct, sometimes even style!).  I'm going backwards and learning film on my Hasselblad.  I started in the digi era but see how amazing film is and wish I had fallen in love with photography years ago.

If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be doing?

I'd be a fashion editor or florist.  Or a women's activist full time.  I'm all over the board!

Tell us about your blog "The Style Collective"

It started out as a partnership between a friend in NY and a friend in California.  Both have impeccable style and we are all diverse in our interests.  The partners got busy in their day jobs and lots of children suddenly came along so I took it over as a place to show new work or inspiration. I miss my lovely friends though.

What’s your best memory of the Billabong shoot in Hawaii?

The big Island of Hawaii is such a diverse place and so one second we were on white sand beaches with blue water, the next an old dirt road that looked like desolate barren land and followed up by sprinting to shoot on spiky black lava fields.  The locations were amazing and I really loved the Maya Hayuk collaboration and wetsuits.  Shooting with such a great team too of course!

What’s your favourite thing about Billabong?

Billabong is based in the surf world but the women's line is really much forward.  Especially the collaborations with artists, bloggers and shooting with the teams, stylists and models they do.  I love that Zippy Seven is one of your main models as she has such a unique appeal and her personality shines through in a photo.
