Billabong Juniors at the Top of the Podium!
Billabong's Junior Development team cemented their scorching start to this summer's ASP European Pro Junior Series with three of it’s surfers making the boys finals of the second event, the ASP 1-Star O’Neill Pro Junior, and Diego Mignot winning the competition.
The 17-year-old Mignot was the form surfer of the event and his total dominance of the final confirmed his incredible potential. He posted a 9.50 and a 9.00 in the final to claim the highest combined heat total of the competition and secure his maiden ASP Pro Junior win.
"It's unreal, I can’t believe I’ve just won!" a euphoric Mignot said. "That was always my goal to win an event but I still can’t believe I just did. I think wave selection was key today cause there weren’t that many in the final and fortunately I got a few."
Mignot’s victory also means he is now at the top of the rankings of the 2013 European Pro Junior Title race. At the end of the pro junior series the top four ranked surfers will travel to the ASP World Junior titles, to be held later in the year.
"I'm going to try not to think too much about the rankings and take it event by event," said Mignot. "My goal is to finish in the top spots to secure a qualification for the World Juniors. So I'll just keep working and training, enjoy my surfing and see how it goes."
Fellow Billabong team members Ian Fontaine (FRA) and Tomas Fernandes (PRT), who finished third and fourth respectively, joined Mignot in the final. Fontaine, a previous winner here at Sopelana, climbed to fourth in the rankings, while Fernandes scored his best ever career result.
"We have had an outstanding start to the junior series," said Richard Marsh, Billabong Europe's team trainer & coach. "The final featured some of the best junior surfing I have witnessed. The team environment has been super positive and all the surfers have been focussing on being as prepared and as professional as they can be for each event. The hard work is paying off and the boys have been tearing it apart."
"It great to see the results of our Junior Development program," said Sam Carrier, Billabong Europe Men’s Marketing Manager. "Richard Marsh has been working hard with these groms leading up to the season and his work and the early results are a nice reward for Billabong's ongoing commitment to our junior athletes.
The team now immediately head to Galicia for the third stop of the series, The Gijon Pro Junior to be held at Playa de San Lorenzo from August 1.
