Cascais Prepares to Host Final Stop of European Qualifying Series

PRAIA DE CARCAVELOS, Cascais - Portugal (Thursday, September 22, 2016) -

"The men’s QS10,000 Billabong Pro Cascais pres. by Allianz, Stop N°12 on the European Qualifying Series, will unfold from September 24 - October 2 between the primary location of Carcavelos and the back-up venue of Guincho. This event will be the culmination of an exciting season that brought surfers from all corners of the World across the Old Continent to battle for the precious ranking points and prize purses on offer at each stop.

The venue(s):

the main competition site at Carcavelos is a hollow beachbreak, that delivers powerful A-frame peaks on the 500m stretch of pristine white sand. The iconic landmark of Forte de São Julião da Barra, a 16th century defense fortress, lies at the Eastern end of the beach and gives the spot a unique feel.

While Carcavelos is under constant attack from the southern swells during winter, September can see flat spells on this side of the coast, so organizers have a more exposed option just outside of town if necessary. Praia do Guincho is located about 15km West and receives swells from most directions, making it a very consistent break. Waves there are often bigger and more powerful.

This fourth edition of the Billabong Pro Cascais pres. by Allianz promises another intense nine days of high-performance surfing as the event is combined with Stop N°8 on the Women’s Samsung Galaxy Championship Tour, the Cascais Women’s Pro. “We are combining the waiting period for both the Cascais Women's Pro and Billabong Cascais Pro presented by Allianz which gives us a longer waiting period to put the best surfers in the world in the best possible waves that Cascais has to offer,” Francisco Spinola, event organizer stated. “Cascais is a unique location because of the different angles the beaches face from Carcavelos to Guincho and we are full mobile to make sure we get the best of it.”

With 10,000 ranking points on offer, the qualifying race for next season’s men’s CT will heat up in Cascais, as only three major events will remain before the end of the season. Fourteen surfers from the current Top34 will participate in this year’s edition and battle with the upcoming talents trying to get their own spot on the Elite tour.

The European contingent will try to play the home soil advantage card and get more surfers in position to join Jeremy Flores (FRA) and Michel Bourez (PYF) next season.

Portuguese up-and-comer Tomas Fernandes (PRT), 20, will join a stacked field as the young Billabong team rider was allocated a wildcard into the event.
