Iggy Pop x Billabong LAB: The Story Behind the Wild Thing Jacket
The iconic "Wild Thing" leather jacket with its panther logo on the back first entered the public consciousness and became synonymous with Iggy Pop when it appeared on the back of Iggy and the Stooges' classic album, Raw Power. The iconic shot was taken by renowned rock photographer Mick Rock in 1972 as Iggy and the Stooges prepared for a show in London at Kings Cross Cinema after Iggy had hit a local market and picked it up on a whim. Since then it's made its way into the hands of a collector but the mystique of the jacket lives on.
To adapt the the iconic Wild Thing jacket into a functional surf piece, we used our Glideskin neoprene and lined it with the Iggy Poster print before dropping the panther icon on the back of the jacket, updated with the colors of the Iggy Pop x Billabong LAB collection. The result is a functional surf jacket with the fashion influence of a classic leather jacket.
