US OPEN WRAP- Griffin Takes Junior Win/ Callinan Makes Quarters
Congrats to Billabong’s groms for standout performances at the US Open of Surfing.
The US Open of Surfing is the biggest surfing event in the nation, if not the entire world, by a long shot. To do well at the US Open against the long list of international competitors is a huge feat in itself, but to win a division at this event in front of the throngs of fans on the beach is one of the greatest accomplishments reached in surfing competition.
In the Main Event Ryan Callinan saw his way to the quarterfinals by using his backhand to take out a majority of the world's best competitive surfers in rather lackluster conditions. Ryan's result is a huge one in his campaign to reach the World Tour midway through the year.
In the Pro Junior division of the event Josh Burke, Seth Moniz and Griffin Colapinto all reached the quarterfinals. The three surfed up to par with the best 21 and under surfers in the event. In the end, it was Griffin Colapinto who reached the final where he used his contest savvy and freakish talent to make the most of the gutless Huntington Beach conditions to come away with the win. For Griffin, the win is one of the biggest of his career, and, at 17-years-old, is an astounding feat in itself.
A huge congratulations to Ryan on the result, Griff on the win, the BLOODLINES crew and the rest of the Billabong team on a great event!
